Ärade promotor, hurmaava Yleinen seppeleensitoja vanhempineen, arvoisa vararehtori, hyvä dekaani sekä riemutohtori- ja riemumaisteripromovendit, distinghuished honorary doctors, hyvät promovoitavat tohtorit ja maisterit, väsymättömät miekanhiojat ja seppeleensitojat, hyvät kutsuvieraat, ärade damer och herrar, ladies and gentlemen.
As the Grand Marshall of this conferment, I have the honour and the pleasure of opening this wreath weaving and sword whetting dinner.
Tonight we thank the wreath weavers and sword whetters for preparing the symbols of the promovendi’s achievements and contributions to science and society. Tomorrow, the promovendi will be formally welcomed into the academic community, in a ceremony steeped with rituals and traditions derived from medieval universities.
The theme of this conferment is “society after order”. At first glance, it may seem that conferment ceremonies simply recreate a wealth of old rituals to reproduce the “old order”. Indeed, some of the conferment ceremony rituals date back as far as the 11th century, when the first European universities were formed. When the first conferment of this University took place in 1643, adopting these international academic rituals was a way of declaring and defining the first Finnish university as an equal with other European institutions. Laurel wreaths were in those times, and still today, an important symbol, representing victory over ignorance.

Over these almost 400 years, conferments have regularly taken place in Finland, and only twice has there been a break – during The Greater Wrath (“isoviha”) and during the war last century. This underscores one key characteristic of academia, continuity. Each and every one of us has developed our own thinking and made our contributions by essentially building on the foundation laid by the generations of researchers who preceded us – by continuing, further developing, or disputing, challenging the work of others who came before us, and in doing so, have woven ourselves, and our work, into a rich academic fabric, started by the researchers of generations past.
Tämä akateemisen yhteisön ja tieteen jatkuvuus konkretisoituu paitsi näissä monisatavuotisissa rituaaleissa, myös riemupromootiomme, vuoden 1966 promovendien läsnäolossa.
Vanhat perinteet ovat muovautuneet ajan saatossa. Ensimmäinen nainen promovoitiin Suomessa vasta runsas vuosisata sitten. Toki naispromovendien määrä lisääntyi sen jälkeen, kun vuodesta 1901 naisten ei enää tarvinnut anoa erikoislupaa opiskella yliopistossa (!). Voisikin sanoa, että elämme promootiota ”sukupuolijärjestyksen jälkeen”: Tiedekuntamme ensimmäiset samaa sukupuolta olevat maisterifranseesiparit nähtiin 10 vuotta sitten, minä itse heidän joukossaan. Tänä vuonna yleinen seppeleensitoja on ensimmäistä kertaa mies. Toisaalta, vaikka pukeutumisohje eksplisiittisesti sallii kumman tahansa pukukoodin noudattamisen biologisesta sukupuolesta riippumatta, on kooditus silti binäärinen.
Tätä juhlavaa akateemista traditiota saneleva järjestys on koko ajan muuttuva. Olihan frakkikin, meillä vakiintunut akateeminen juhlapuku, alunperin Ranskan vallankumouksen radikaalien asu. Jokainen promootio on traditioita muuttaessaan omalla tavallaan muuttanut ja rikkonut järjestystä – monesti inklusiivisempaan ja oikeudenmukaisempaan suuntaan. Miltähän tämän promootion riemupromootio vuonna 2066 näyttää!

Conferment is essentially about inviting new members to join the academic community, and in a way, about maintaining the social order, and distinction from others. Traditionally within conferment, women’s role has been exclusively that of the wreath weaver. As a devoted feminist, I have spoken of gender (and sexuality), but inclusions and exclusions, order, are produced and reproduced on the bases of other categorizations, such as language, religion, and physical ability. Traditions can be respected, but also need to be renewed in order to make society and the traditions themselves more inclusive and just.
Promotion är en fest för kunskap och bildning. Vår nationalfilosof, Johan Vilhelm Snellman sade: “Bildning är en garant för en liten nation”. På sistone har det ibland känts att man inte kommer ihåg det längre i Finland. Men Snellman – som själv promoverades till hedersdoktor i 1860 vid Helsingfors Universitet – har även sagt, att vetenskap kan inte automatiskt förutsätta folkets stöd, om inte det påvisar att det finns någon nytta av det. Hän sanoi: ”Yliopiston on välttämätöntä osallistua paitsi päivän tieteellisiin taisteluihin, myös päivän isänmaalle tärkeisiin kysymyksiin. Ilman tällaista toimintaa yliopisto ei voi toivoa tunnustusta, ei tieteen maailmassa eikä omilta kansalaisiltaan.” Tätä yhteiskuntatieteiden strategisen arvon mainontaa jatkamme sitten arkena. Nyt on aika juhlia.
